Laser Gum Surgery Q & A
What is laser gum surgery?
Laser gum surgery, or periodontal laser therapy known as Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™), uses a dental laser to access and safely remove diseased gum tissue from around the roots of affected teeth.
The process is quick and effective. It provides several advantages over traditional gum surgery, including:
- Less pain
- Less postoperative sensitivity
- Less gum recession
- Very little downtime
Laser gum surgery prevents gum disease from spreading. This ensures your smile stays healthy and problem-free for years to come.
What happens during laser gum surgery?
Before conducting laser gum surgery, Emery & Scuro DMD, PC conducts an oral exam and reviews your oral health history. Next, they perform a periodontal charting and take a series of oral X-rays to determine the severity of your gum disease.
After gathering this information, your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums. Once the anesthesia sets in, they insert a tiny laser fiber between your teeth and gums. The laser fiber gently eradicates infection, removing damaged gum tissue throughout your mouth.
After removing your infected gum tissue, your provider cleans tartar and plaque from the surface of each tooth. Next, they put the laser on a different setting and create a blood clot that seals your gum pocket, preventing further infection.
How many appointments does laser gum surgery take?
At Emery & Scuro DMD, PC, laser gum surgery usually takes two separate appointments. During your first appointment, your provider treats one side of your mouth. 7-12days later the other side is treated.
At your second appointment, your provider performs the very same process, but on the other side of your mouth.
Each appointment takes about two hours.
Am I a good candidate for laser gum surgery?
Only a qualified dentist can determine if you’re a good candidate for laser gum surgery. If you have moderate to severe gum disease, you probably qualify.
If you qualify for laser gum surgery, it is beneficial for people who have these conditions and this means less pain, bleeding, swelling, tissue removed, downtime, and less recovery time which is decidedly less costly to you and your employer.
What is recovery like following laser gum surgery?
Following laser gum surgery, the team sends you home with a list of recovery instructions. In the first few days following your procedure, it’s normal to experience some mild discomfort. Taking an over-the-counter analgesic should provide adequate relief.
To prevent an infection from recurring, make sure to practice good oral hygiene. The team at Emery & Scuro DMD, PC, recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and visiting the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.
